History


In May of 1996, a group of concerned individuals identified a service gap for persons affected by HIV/AIDS.  It was apparent that an organization was needed to fight the isolation and stigma  faced by those living with the HIV virus.

Wings was formed to provide social, cultural, support, educational, and recreational activities. 

People working or volunteering in the HIV/AIDS community were approached with the concept of WINGS. The response was overwhelmingly supportive and in June of 1996 interested parties met and began the process of incorporation and to officially plan the activities as WINGS, Positive Social Opportunities Network.

We incorporated with the State of Michigan as a Non-profit 501(c)3 in July 1996.

Mission Statement

WINGS is an all volunteer organization serving persons affected by HIV/AIDS.  We support life through social, cultural, emotional, educational and recreational activities in a compassionate, empathetic, safe and healthy atmosphere.

Advances in HIV treatment over the past decade have transformed HIV-infection from a fatal diagnosis into a manageable chronic illness. Despite these dramatic advances, the social aspect of the illness including the stigma of HIV continues to threaten the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of persons living with HIV/AIDS.
